Inpatient Services
The Alexandra Marine and General Hospital is a Schedule 1 facility. Mental health services are a protected provincial program. The budget allocation for providing mental health services will remain at the 2009/2010 levels or higher and the services will be maintained at the same levels or higher.
The Hospital provides a regional program to the residents of Huron County. The program includes 20 rated mental health beds. The Hospital provides assessment and treatment of inpatients with a variety of acute psychiatric disturbances such as psychoses, depression, chronic and acute schizophrenia, alcohol and drug abuse and suicidal behaviour, etc. The inpatient service includes provision of psychiatric diagnostic and treatment services to voluntary and involuntary adult patients suffering from acute psychiatric disorders. Concentrated nursing care for severely ill or markedly disturbed patients requiring close supervision for a portion of their stay is provided in three one-bed rooms within the 20-bed inpatient unit. Staffing is provided on a one-to-one basis for these patients. Nursing staff is available at all times to take emergency telephone calls to deal with crisis intervention.

Social Work
The Social Work Department provide the following services to psychiatric inpatients following a case management approach:

Discharge planning, which involves assessment of the patient and his/her situation to determine appropriate post hospital care and facilitate placement, where needed.

Counselling services provided directly to patients – this might include individual psychotherapy, marriage counselling, family therapy and group therapy.

Arrange financial assistance, legal representation, educational upgrading and vocational rehabilitation, when needed.

Consultation and assessment provided by multidisciplinary treatment teams, and involvement in community and hospital committees.
