The four main components of obstetrical services provided at the AM&GH are antenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, and nursery care. The service provides care for maternity and newborn patients consistent with a level one care unit.
Antenatal care is provided to patients requiring bed rest, observation and assessment, blood pressure monitoring and fetal heart monitoring. Early labour assessments and nonstress testing and ultrasound are performed on an outpatient basis. Expectant parent classes are available through the Huron County Health Unit.
Intrapartum care is provided in the birthing room. Caesarean births are performed in the surgical suite. The unit maintains a philosophy of providing family centres maternal child care and is moving towards the concept of single-room maternity care which promotes "de-institutionalizing" of the birth process.
Family physicians provide obstetrical services with the support of one obstetrician and one general surgeon. Anaesthesia services are provided by the local GP anaesthetists.
Staff provide contemporary obstetrical services. Nursing staff are proficient coaches during the labour and birth events. If required or requested epidural anaesthesia is provided and epimorphine analgesia is provided after cesarean births.
Recovery following the birthing process and subsequent postpartrum care is accommodated on the two bed obstetrical unit. Rooming in of babies with their mothers is encouraged and flexible family visitation is accommodated. Combined care of mother and newborn is provided in order to support the concept of family centred care.

The nursery provides routine assessment, testing and treatment for newborns. Neonates requiring a higher level of care due to complications such as sepsis or prematurity are stabilized and transferred to London by the transport team. Transferred patients are returned to AMGH for transitional care in their recovery phase.
Interaction with hospital staff begins during the obstetrical preadmit clinic, continues through the hospital stay and then a post partum visit to the unit 24 - 48 hours after the discharge. One to one teaching in encouraged to promote safety and comfort of the new family.
