The surgical services include general, gynecological, ENT, dental and orthopaedic surgery. These services include both open and laparoscopic procedures (hysterectomies, vaginal repairs, hernias, cholecystectomies, tubal ligations, appendectomies and bowel resection).
Caesarian sections are also performed in OR area.
Endoscopies performed in the surgical suite include gastroscopes, colonoscopies, esophageal dilation, and sclerotherapy of the esophagus. Flexible sigmoidoscopies are performed in the emergency department.
The hospital operates a pre-operative clinic for all patients having surgery with an anaesthetist in attendance. This clinic has had a significant impact on the surgical patient's length of stay.
There is currently two general surgeons and a gynecologist who perform surgery. Orthopaedic day surgery is performed by a consultant once a week. Anaesthesia coverage is provided by two GP anaesthetists. ENT and dental is performed by consultants as needed.
Patients requiring highly specialized surgery such as thoracic, major cardiovascular, neurosurgical and intra-abdominal urology are referred or transferred out. In addition patients experiencing multiple trauma are transported to London.
The surgical workload performed on a day surgery basis compares favourably with hospitals providing a similar range and scope of services.
