Our Emergency Department serves a catchment area of about 15,000 people. It is open 24 hours a day 365 days of the year. We see over 20,000 people per year. Included in that number are clinic patients who see a general surgeon, an orthopedic surgeon or a gynecologist. Family Physicians may also see patients who require elective procedures in the Emergency Department.
There is a physician on call 24 hours a
day. There is also a back up physician on call to provide additional support to the department during emergencies.
Patients are seen first by a qualified Registered Nurse and triaged. Triage is a sorting process. Patients are prioritized according to their acuity and urgency level and they are put into appropriate treatment areas and are seen by the physician in order of urgency. All the ER nurses have taken the Canadian Triage Acuity Scale course developed through a focus group by the Ministry of Health.
Our staff have certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Advanced Trauma Life Support Pediatric Advanced Life Support. Psychiatry, Obstetrics, Gynecology, Internal Medicine, and General and Orthopaedic Surgery consultations or referrals are available to the department.
There is a good working relationship with Stratford and London hospitals for serious and complicated cases that require additional support.
